At UUCB we enjoy a variety of music every Sunday. There are 3 or 4 hymns sung by the congregation, with guidance and encouragement from our wonderful volunteer choir. Hymns range from very familiar tunes with old or new words,  to new hymns, many composed by UU writers and composers, and hymns from other cultures across the world. Once a month we sing folk songs, which will be familiar (if you remember the days of Peter, Paul and Mary) Each month, an article in the Gallimaufry (the UUCB Newsletter) offers a bit of background about one or two of the less familiar hymns, so they don’t seem like strangers when we sing them.

Diana L Ryder, Music Director and Hymnist
Diana Ryder’s Grandmother and Mother were both active church musicians in the Ozarks in Missouri. Diana believes this was a large inspiration for her to begin the same and at a young age began playing and singing in church in Northern Virginia. Outside of church music and through high school and college, she learned to work with others as she performed in rock and jazz groups professionally. Diana finished up her Associate in Arts degree in Music while working at Rockledge Presbyterian Church as the early service pianist for 7 years.  In 1987, Diana left home for Stetson University in Deland Florida to complete her Bachelors in music degree, graduating with honors, majoring in Music Theory and Composition, with a special focus in piano performance.

Since 1987 Diana has played piano/keyboard in many local jazz, and “old time” bands here in Brevard County and the Orlando area, as well as a variety of churches all over Brevard County. She also operates a small private piano studio in historic Cocoa Village, “Ryder Piano Studio”  For all the groups she has been a part of Diana has written many piano and small ensemble pieces.  We looks forward to her sharing her gift of original pieces with our church! The UUCB Service Choir is always welcoming of new members.  No audition required! Come see Diana after church for more information.

Many of our choir members also contribute their instrumental skills. Jane Arens plays the piano as needed. Dave Hoffman leads the UFO (Unitarian Folk Orchestra) with his guitar and lead tenor singing. Steven Hunt often contributes his piano playing with more modern pieces.

In addition to our Sunday services, we have a traditional Christmas Eve service, with many carols and other seasonal (Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Solstice, …) music. It’s a family-friendly service, that sometimes concludes with a visit from St. Nicholas.

If you can sing, even a bit, and would like to join us, please come early one Sunday (we warm up at 10:15 am) and join in. We also rehearse on occasional Monday evenings from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
